The Works is an indie rock band originated in Westport, Co. Mayo, where all its members initially lived. Over the past few years, their university experiences broadened their base to Galway, and the band now considers itself rooted in both Westport and Galway to reach a wider audience.
The band’s journey began in 2020 when Oisín and Jamie brought three friends together to form an indie rock group. They began experimenting by publishing songs on Spotify and other platforms, eventually building a modest local following. Among their early fans was Fintan Dunne, who was inspired by their music to form a rock-covers group with his friends. When Oisín and Jamie’s original group disbanded, both were eager to embark on a new musical project. This led to a fortunate meeting with Fintan during their search for a bassist. Fintan quickly impressed with his skills and charisma, earning his place in the band. He later introduced Rory as a second guitarist, further enriching the lineup.
At the same time, Nathan, an experienced drummer, had been honing his craft with various bands. When he took a break from his busy schedule, Oisín and Jamie managed to entice him into a jam session, drawn together by a shared passion for indie and rock music.
After a month of rehearsals, The Works played their first gig at The Clock Tavern in Westport. The outdoor performance at the end of summer attracted a lively crowd, opening doors to future opportunities in town. They began playing at local pubs and eventually reached McGing’s, a key venue in Westport where the town’s top acts frequently perform. This success, combined with their first ticketed Galway gig, helped them fund the recording of two original singles earlier this year.
The band’s momentum continued over the summer with full sets of original music performed at two major annual events in Westport. Since then, their audience has steadily grown through gigs at McGing’s and in Galway. Upcoming performances at the Dean Crowe Theatre in Athlone and Fibber Magees in Dublin will take The Works farther from home than ever before.
Adding to the excitement is the release of their debut EP, The Things We Do To Get High, scheduled for December 4. Recorded over the summer at Clew Bay Recording Studio, the EP includes two singles, Junkie and Moody, already available for streaming. For The Works, sharing original music and connecting with fans has always been the heart of their journey, and they hope this release will help expand their reach beyond Ireland.
