Richard Hearns started as a powerful figurative artist able to grasp subtle intimate details in order to covey an insightful perception of reality. Ordinary objects became metaphors of themselves thus inspiring a different and deeper point of view on everyday life. The natural evolution of such an artistic journey has been the development of a refreshing new artistic language drifting away from the literal use of lines and shapes. In Hearns’ works the colour in its tone and texture becomes a landscape of the artist inner world.
Richard Hearns paints in the wild landscape of The Burren National Park in County Clare. Each painting is an extension of his physical surroundings – earth, sea and sky – materialising the artist’s experiences and memories of colour and natural phenomena.
Born in Beirut and raised in Ireland, Hearns is deeply aware of the unique cultural backgrounds of both aspects of his heritage. Articulated in his abstract paintings, his experiences and connections with the traditions of these separate locations and cultures combine to form a triangular history. He endeavours to express his understandings of exploration, discovery and identity through the medium of paint.
“My dual heritage has greatly influenced and inspired my paintings. The Irish have always had an outward looking perspective and a unique identity in the world. Likewise, throughout history, the Lebanese people have covered great expanses in order to explore, learn, trade and grow.”
Highlighted by the Boston Globe as “one of Ireland’s premier contemporary artists“, Richard Hearns has been exhibiting internationally for over a decade with solo shows in New York, London, and Paris.
For the past three years Hearns and his wife Boo have been creating their very own Giverny by transforming a one hundred year old farm in the heart of the Burren into a heaven of creativity.
Along with the gardens, studios and kitchens the place has become a real heaven for Hearns, his friends, supporters and collectors.
Hearns is represented by Cadogan Gallery, which opened its first gallery in South Kensington London over forty years ago.
Now Cadogan has added an international perspective to their distinctive exhibition programme by opening a gallery in Milan. in both London and Milan.
Richard Hearns next solo show ‘The Living Mountain’ opens May 14 at Cadogan Gallery, Milan.
