Irish National Opera’s Maria Stuarda opens at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin on June 5 for 4 performances and tours to Cork, Wexford, Limerick until June 22.
It’s the company’s first ever production of a work by Donizetti one of opera’s most prolific and popular composers and there will be eight performances in all.
This production will be conducted by Fergus Shiel and directed by Tom Creed and will have a very contemporary look at the shenanigans that went between Queen Elizabeth 1 and Mary Queen of Scots but not all is accurate in the Donizetti opera as he had his own take on things for the opera: for example the two queens meet and spar in the opera but not in real life. It makes for a good opera that they did. Creed will mirror much of the historical to today’s world, where we will see a House arrest, what happens to political prisoners and the antics in the Corridors of Power and celebrity culture blown up and out of proportion.
